Master of Public Health Degrees
Public health is a field that concentrates on improving the habits of communities and societies in ways that benefit the health and wellbeing of their members.
My Degree and What It’s Good For
An MPH can qualify a public health worker for administrative or leadership roles in both public and private public health promoting organizations. The U.S. government has several bureaus that hire public health workers, the most prominent of which is Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC), which does exactly what the name says. A major concern of public health organizations is the prevention of disease spreading throughout communities, and courses in epidemiology are a part of most Master of Public Health Programs. Public health is such a broad field that there are career opportunities in it for both scientists and people with humanities backgrounds. A strong drive to help people and positively influence society in the long term are prerequisites of success in the field of public health.
My Earning Potential
While the government doesn’t publish wage statistics for “public health workers” because the category is too broad, The Bureau of Labor Statistics does publish data for epidemiologists, which are a crucial part of public health work. The average salary for an epidemiologist, as of May, 2011, was $69,660.
